 | The number of students enrolling in Higher Education in the UK has increased significantly. This has subsequently affected an increase in the level of student debt owed to many of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions. Of particular interest is the growth in international student registrations. | | We understand that the vast majority of UK universities and colleges derive a substantial income from international students and for the majority, it is difficult to see how they would continue to prosper without it. A figure of £2.5 billion is estimated to be earned by universities from these fees alone.
The precise number of international students in the UK is not known as no central statistics are kept of all those in both public and private sector institutions – and those figures which are available relate to previous academic years and are therefore at least 12 months out of date.
The most recently available figures for 2008/09 for those international student studying full-time at publicly funded higher education institutions are:
| | EU Students | 92,000 | | | Non-EU Students | 214,000 | | | Total | 306,000 | | (source: HESA) |
Figures for international students actually arriving in the UK and given Leave to Enter are so follows: | | | Students | Student Visitors | Total | | | 2006 | 309,000 | - | 309,000 | | | 2007 | 358,000 | 3,000 | 361,000 | | | 2008 | 227,000 | 143,000 | 370,000 | | | 2009 | 270,000 | 198,000 | 468,000 | | (source:Home Office Quarterly Statistical Summary, August 2010, Table1.2) |
Clearance for the 12 month period to June 2010 compared to the same period to June 2009 show a 35% increase.
