In recent years, the number of students enrolling in Higher Education in the UK has increased significantly. This has subsequently affected an increase in the level of student debt owed to many of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions. Of particular interest is the growth in international student registrations. |

Within the UK Higher Education in 2004/05 international students made up 65% of full-time postgraduates and 40% of all postgraduates. International students also accounted for 48% of full-time research degree students and 41% of all research postgraduates. A large proportion of these students are attending from non-EU countries. Between the academic years of 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 there was an increase in students attending from Pakistan by 39%, China 36%, Nigeria 29% & India 17%, representing the largest figures. (Source: UKCOSA) These growing statistics are placing additional pressure on the financial resources of the UK’s Higher Education establishments.
